DVD Review: BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD Volume 2
Release date: November 10, 2009
MSRP: $14.98
88 minutes
Warner Bros. Animation's latest DC Comics-based Cartoon Network series, Batman: The Brave and the Bold is a throwback to the classically drawn, lighter superhero cartoons of the 1960s. Each episode teams a clever, bantering Batman (Diedrich Bader) with guest heroes.
In contrast to the currently popular realistic interpretations of Batman, the tone here is fanciful without crossing into silly. Typically there is a short standalone adventure before the opening credits, followed by a longer main adventure. The single-disc Volume 2 includes four 22-minute episodes:
Day of the Dark Knight! - Merlin (David McCallum) transports Batman and Green Arrow back to Camelot to retrieve Excalibur and thwart Morgan Le Fay's takeover of Arthur's kingdom.
Enter The Outsiders! - Batman and Wildcat (R. Lee Ermey) battle a group of misguided super-powered teens.
Dawn of the Deadman! - Buried alive by Gentleman Ghost, Batman uses a secret meditation technique to seek help from Deadman (Michael Rosenbaum).
Fall of the Blue Beetle! - Newly-minted Beetle Jaime Reyes (Will Friedle) lands in peril on an impetuous quest to learn more about the former Beetles.
There are no special features, but this is a nice sample of the series. Read More......
DVD Review: NOTHING LIKE THE HOLIDAYS
Anchor Bay
Release date: October 26th, 2009
MSRP: $29.98
Director: Alfredo De Villa
Stars: John Leguizamo, Debra Messing, Alfred Molina, Elizabeth Pena, Vanassa Felito, Freddy Rodríguez, Jay Hernandez
It is the holiday season on the Rodriguez house. Eduardo (Alfred Molina) and Anna (Elizabeth Pena) will be celebrating the holidays with their three children. Roxana (Vanassa Ferlito) is an aspiring actress that is finding the pursuit of her dream a lot harder than she expected. Jesse (Freddy Rodriguez) is returning home after three years in of service in Iraq and Mauricio (John Leguizamo)is struggling with his wife (Debra Messing) whose career goals clash with his desire to have a family.
As one can imagine, the gathering results in plenty of drama, spilling of secrets and emotional breakthroughs. Perhaps a bit too much drama, as the film risks numbing us with the truckload of neuroses and confrontations that are packed into 98 minutes. A little less could have gone farther.
For me, NltH is a mixed bag: The cast does a very nice job with what they have, but the screenplay is uneven and often struggles to find a balance between humor and drama. The film is about a Puerto Rican family and it feels like they tried to cram every damn cultural cliché in the book at us. I can't help but feel they could have made it authentic without playing up so many stereotypes. The story that is at the heart of this film is a universal one: No matter what issues and conflicts arise, our family is the only one we have.
Extras:
Director Alfredo De Villa, producer Robert Teitel and actor Freddy Rodriguez offer up a commentary track (with appearances by Luis Guzman) that is breezy fare. Everyone likes everyone and was thrilled to be a part of this project! That gets a bit old, but they have a good time and that fun is contagious. The film is set in Chicago and the talk about the city is pretty cool with comments about the weather, restaurants and local landmarks.
There is one featurettes: Nothing like the Holidays: Cast Reunion. This runs just under 12 minutes and features Rodriduez, Messing, Ferlito and a few others as they talk about the making of the film and what fun it was.
Also included are a blooper reel (yawn) and theatrical trailer.
Fans of good acting will likely enjoy NltH, as the cast is strong and deliver the goods. But don't expect a well-rounded film, as it falls a little short. Not a bad film, but I can't help but think there was something better hiding inside, waiting to be let out. That said, the warmth and charisma of these talented group of actors makes NOTHING LIKE THE HOLIDAYS enjoyable fare.
Order season five of NUMB3RS.

In no time, Amanda is dodging bullets, foiling assassination plots – and finding herself drawn to the dashing stranger, agent Lee Stetson, aka Scarecrow. Of course, Scarecrow has no interest in a ditsy amateur spy, no matter how pretty. But she certainly is handy in a crisis! Share the Season One fun with stars Kate Jackson and Bruce Boxleitner in this fast-paced 5-Disc, 21-Episode Set of the lighthearted series that proves laughs and romance are powerful weapons in the battle to protect national security.
Scarecrow and King ran from October 83 through May of 87 on CBS and, if my memory servies me correctly, was likeable fluff.

DVD Info: Mill Creek announces season one of HUNTER.

As part of their deal with Stephen Cannell, Mill Creek has announced they will release season one of HUNTER, on DVD, on January 19th, 2010.
Often dubbed as television's answer to Dirty Harry, former football star Fred Dryer lights up the screen as Los Angeles Police Department detective Rick Hunter, a renegade cop who breaks the rules and takes justice into his own hands. Partnered with the equally stunning and rebellious Sgt. Dee Dee "The Brass Cupcake" McCall (Stepfanie Kramer), the tough-minded duo bring an edgy attitude, extreme action, sly humor and sexual chemistry while cracking down on L.A.'s slimiest criminals.
Created by THE A-TEAM creator Frank Lupo and produced by the legendary Stephen J. Cannell, HUNTER combines hard-hitting action with mispaired-buddy comedy through all 19 hard-hitting season one episodes. This explosive debut season also features guest stars Dennis Franz, Brian Dennehy, Dennis Farina, Bo Svenson, Joanna Kerns, Ed O'Neill and more. HUNTER was one of the most popular television shows of the 1980s and one of the most successful cop shows of all time, enjoying a successful 7-season run on NBC.
HUNTER debuted, on NBC, on Sept 18th of 1984 and ran through 1991. There were a few telefilms and an attempt in 2003 to relaunch the series. I have very fond memories of Hunter. Whether or not the show will stand the test of time remains to be seen, but I am happy to hear I will have the opportunity to find out.
The set will have a retail price of $14.98.
DVD Review: TRICK 'R TREAT
Release date: October 6, 2009
MSRP: $27.98 (dvd), $35.99 (Blu-ray)
Director: Michael Dougherty
Writer: Michael Dougherty
Stars: Anna Paquin, Brian Cox, Dylan Baker, Rochelle Aytes, Quinn Lord
Once upon a time, horror films were scary. Music and lighting were used to build suspense and keep us on the edge of our seats. Most modern “horror” films focus more on gore and brutality, not simply killing but doing it slowly and offering the viewers a front row seat to each slice. The advent of torture porn is, in my opinion, the worst thing to hit films since Joel Schumacher.
For anyone that feels the same way, TRICK R' TREAT is a must see.
Michael Dougherty has crafted a smart, fun spooky film that puts the celebration of Halloween front and center, offering up ghouls, the dead rising from the Earth, werewolves and other delightful staples of the genre, he lovingly crafts a batch of tales designed to make you jump out of your seat, not lose your lunch.
These tales are set in a small town in Ohio. Every Halloween, the community goes all out with wild decorations, a big party in the center of town and, of course, children decked out on costumes. We have a sweet, young girl looking for romance, a school principal skulking about in the dead of night, teens gathering in the woods (never a good thing in horror movies) for some fun, the exploration of a legend of a school bus tragedy and a battle between a cranky curmudgeon and an enigmatic child wearing a sack over his head (for good reason!). I am purposefully not going into much detail as the surprises and chills are better left to be experienced without any forewarning.
TrT does a pretty impressive job of mixing humor and chills. In many films, the result of this marriage can result in awkwardness and poor pacing. Writer/director Dougherty shows remarkable skills, I would have never guessed this was his directing debut. He plays with the traditions of the genre and still manages for present a film that feels fresh.
Extras: I would have loved a batch of goodies that showed us what went into making this film. Sadly, they are not here. We do get one delightful little nugget: TRICK 'R TREAT: Seasons Greetings (3:48). It is an animated short from 1996 that features Sam (the bag-wearing little tyke) and clearly was the genesis for the feature film. It has an optional commentary from Dougherty.
So anyone looking for a genuine scary film, this is one for you. The cast does an excellent job with the stories they have been given and newbie director Dougherty delivers with the touch of an old hand.
Order TRICK 'R TREAT.

DVD info: Season one of SOUTHLAND coming in January.

Warner Home Video has announced they will be releasing SOUTHLAND: The Complete First Season: Uncensored on Jan 26th. SOUTHLAND has been in the news of late with NBC dumping it and TNT (wisely) picking it up.
In SOUTHLAND, John Cooper (Michael Cudlitz – A River Runs Through It) is a veteran cop assigned to train young rookie Ben Sherman (Ben McKenzie – The O.C.). Cooper attacks his job with a no-nonsense firmness that sometimes leaves Sherman wondering if he’s really cut out to be a cop.
The series also follows Detective Lydia Adams (Regina King – Ray, Jerry Maguire), who spends her off-work hours serving as her mother’s primary caregiver. Her partner, Detective Russell Clarke (Tom Everett Scott – Boiler Room), is a father struggling with an unhappy marriage. Detective Daniel “Sal” Salinger (Michael McGrady – The Thin Red Line) oversees a unit of gang detectives, including Nate Moretta (Kevin Alejandro – Drive, Ugly Betty) and Sammy Bryant (Shawn Hatosy – Alpha Dog). And patrol officer Chickie Brown (Arija Bareikis – Crossing Jordan) is a single mom determined to make her mark as the first woman in the SWAT unit.
For extras, there will be a featurette titled: SOUTHLAND: Redefining the Cop Drama. As far as what uncensored means, it has been said that the season one episodes are being extended for TNT. I would assume that this set will feature those extended eps.
MSRP: $29.98.

SGT. ROCK next comic book film sensation?

It looks like DC Comics' World War II ass-kicker Sgt. Rock may be heading to the movies.
According to Heat Vision, Rock will be leaving WW II and heading to the future. Now exactly what is meant by "the future" is not known, it does not offer any time period. I am guessing it would be set in the modern day, but that is not specifically stated.
Sgt. Frank Rock led Easy Company and first appeared in 1959 in a comic called “Our Army at War”. In 1977, the name was changed to SGT. ROCK and it continued until 1988.
Francis Lawrence is slated to direct. Lawrence's resume includes CONSTANTINE, I AM LEGEND and music videos for GREEN DAY and Jennifer Lopez. None of that has me too excited, but he also produced/directed KING, the short-lived, yet fairly good, NBC alternate reality series that was a retelling of King David. Lawrence has a number of other projects in development, including a prequel to I AM LEGEND (Leave it alone!) and film versions of WATER FOR ELEPHANTS (Sara Gruen) and SURVIVOR (Chuck Palahniuk).
The screenplay is being handled by Chad St. John. Chad has not had any projects come to fruition, but he has done scripts for a remake of OUTLAND and for Frank Miller's RONIN graphic novel.

Real world makes EQUALIZER film unlikely.
Once upon a time, word came that award-winning author
(and all-around nice guy) Michael Connelly had teamed up with his friend, and fellow author, Terrill Lee Lankford to write a screenplay for a film version of THE EQUALIZER. Not surprisingly, many were excited by this prospect.
Right off the bat, speculative casting was done. I thought Liam Neeson was the ideal choice.
The series starred Edward Woodward as Robert McCall, a former government agent that helped those in need. He ran an ad in the want ads reading "GOT A PROBLEM? ODDS AGAINST YOU? CALL THE EQUALIZER! " Woodward won a Golden Globe in 1987. In the same year, the show picked up an Edgar for the episode The Cup. The Equalizer aired on CBS from 1985 to 1989.
Sadly, it sounds like the cruel financial realities of the real world are making the possibilities of an EQUALIZER film quite remote.
The screenplay was done for the Weinstein company. The Weinsteins originally founded MIRAMAX, but split from it and Disney to head out on their own. The company is having...shall we say financial difficulties.
I recently spoke with Michael, who confirmed it is collecting dust with no plans for production.
Crap.
TNT signs exclusive syndication deal for THE MENTALIST.

TNT continues to bolster it's drama roster.
We have written about the ordering of pilots for DELTA BLUES and RIZZOLI, as well as the pick-up of SOUTHLAND. Now the cabler has announced it has purchased exclusive syndication rights for THE MENTALIST.
THE MENTALIST stars Golden Globe® and Emmy® nominee Baker as Patrick Jane, an independent consultant with the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI) who has a remarkable track record for solving serious crimes by using his razor-sharp skills of observation.
Within the Bureau, Jane is notorious for his blatant lack of protocol and his semi-celebrity past as a psychic medium, whose paranormal abilities he now admits were feigned. Jane’s role in cracking a series of tough, high-profile cases is greatly valued by his fellow agents. No-nonsense Senior Agent Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney – Prison Break) openly resists having Jane in her unit and alternates between reluctantly acknowledging Jane’s usefulness and blasting him for his theatrics, narcissism and dangerous lack of boundaries.
Lisbon’s team includes agents Kimball Cho (Tim Kang – Third Watch), Wayne Rigsby (Owain Yeoman – Generation Kill) and rookie member Grace Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti – The O.C.), who all think Jane’s a loose cannon but admire his charm and knack for clearing cases.
Personally, I see THE MENTALIST as a mixed bag. Simon Baker is very charismatic and there is some fun chemistry between some of the characters, but it is also very formulaic with little real character evolution. Oh yeah, Cho rocks.
The show is only on their second season, so TNT won't start airing it until 2012, at which time it should have four seasons under it's belt.

THE PRETENDER Season 1- 4
20th Century Fox DVD On a recent trip to Target I found seasons 2 and 3 of The Pretender boxed together for a low price, I think $14.99. I had vague memories of the show but recalled it being interesting and at least entertaining enough to warrant my spending 15 bucks. Being the anal retentive freak I am I also had to get the first two season, which I found used, also at a real nice price. Mrs. Crimespree and I then spent about two weeks watching a few episodes a night till we had seen it all. Well, all it turns out except two made for TV movies. The show holds up well because the lead character, Jarod, is so fun to watch. Jarod is a pretender, a person who is beyond genius and can become anyone or anything. This makes every episode a little different. Some weeks he’s a race car driver, some weeks a doctor sometimes a cop. But at all times he’s trying to help the little guy, people who have been wronged. Why? Because as a youngster he was taken away by a group called “The centre” where they used him to formulate strange scenarios which later were used to hurt people. And here’s where our subplot and back story come in. Jarod wants to get back at the centre and also to find his parents. The Centre wants Jarod back and they are filled with evil bad guys and henchmen plus a few people that become friendly with Jarod and want to help. A bit forced, but fun. It’s a show loaded with 1990’s character actors, some really fun plots and some truly great moments. I especially like how Jarod discovers something each week he missed out on as a kid, like ice cream or cookies. I don’t know that I would rush out and pay a lot for this, but if you can find it at a decent price it’s definitely relaxing and worth watching again.

Producers from THE KILLER INSIDE ME talk about the film.
YouTuber knowyourmo posted a couple of clips of Brad Schlei and Andrew Eaton talking about the production. They discuss the reasons for shooting in Oklahoma as well as the source material (Jim Thompson's novel of the same name) and the problems of financing a film in the current economy.
Some interesting stuff, worth watching.

NUMB3RS will feature some closure, how to lobby for the show.
As I said Thursday, NUMB3RS appears to be coming to an end. The show has had it's order cut from 22 to 16 episodes, something that is likely the beginning of the end.
But there is a bit of good news for fans: The show plans on wrapping things up:
Co-creator Cheryl Heuton told EW that “It will be designed to stand as a finale, but it won’t create story situations that would hamper us if the network should decide to order more episodes.”
I guess that is something.
A request: Have Larry (Peter MacNicol) go off into the sunset with Megan (former cast member Diane Farr).
Star Rob Morrow has posted the following on his Facebook page:
Hi All, CBS has pulled us back to 16 eps from an original order of 22. not a good sign. but, we're not over yet. we need a big write-in campaign. ya'll have to get everyone u know to blitz the network with unrelenting letters. keep numbers alive....
here is the address:
Nina Tassler
President, CBS Entertainment
4024 Radford Ave., Room 3118
Studio City, CA 91604
thanks all, rob m
As I said in the previous post on this, I think NUMB3RS is one of the best police shows on television. They have done a killer job of developing the characters over the seasons and have some stellar acting. If you like the show, let CBS know! If you are not familiar with it, give it a shot! Jessica Alba poster for MACHETE.

The folks over at Coming Soon have provided the world with the first look at the new Jessica Alba promotional poster for MACHETE.
The feature version of the trailer finds Machete (Trejo) a renegade former Mexican Federale, roaming the streets of Texas after a shakedown from drug lord Torrez (Seagal). Reluctantly, Machete takes an offer from spin doctor Benz (Fahey) to assassinate McLaughlin (De Niro) a corrupt Senator. Double crossed and on the run Machete braves the odds with the help of Luz (Rodriguez), a saucy taco slinger, Padre (Marin) his "holy" brother, and April (Lohan) a socialite with a penchant for guns. All while being tracked by Sartana (Alba), a sexy ICE agent with a special interest in the blade slinger.
If the film is half as entertaining as the trailer it is based on, we should be in for a hella good time.
